San Antonio Spurs guard De’Aaron Fox agreed to a four-year, $228 million contract extension, according to ESPN NBA Insider Shams Charania. Fox’s deal will have no player option in the final year and secures Fox’s future in San Antonio until the 2029-30 season after being traded from the Sacramento Kings during the trade deadline.
This extension cements the Spurs’ young core of Fox, Stephon Castle, Victor Wembanyama, Devin Vassell, and No. 2 pick Dylan Harper. The Spurs now have a dynamic and talented young backcourt in Fox and Harper, who should be able to complement one another despite rumors saying Fox could be expendable after the Spurs drafted Harper. Fox and Wembanyama played only five games together last season, but with a full season and training camp together, the Spurs will look to become a force in the Western Conference and reach the playoffs for the first time since 2019.
Fox averaged 19.7 points and 6.8 assists in 17 games with the Spurs last season and had season-ending surgery on March 18 to repair tendon damage in his left pinkie. In 62 games for the Spurs and Kings, Fox averaged 23.5 points, 6.3 assists, and 4.8 rebounds, being one of three guards (Cade, Shai) to average 23+ points, 6+ assists, and 4.5+ rebounds while playing at least 60 games. He is one of four players (Russell Westbrook, James Harden, Nikola Jokic) with 10,000 points, 3,000 assists. and 700 steals since entering the NBA in 2017-18.
